How to Reset Your BMW E36 & E30 Oil Service Light

Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 5 minutes | Applies to: E36 (1992–1999), Late E30 (1988–1991)

You changed the oil. The OIL SERVICE light is still staring at you. BMW didn't include a reset button because they expected you to drive to the dealer. You don't have to.

There are two ways to do this. We use the jumper wire method — it's free, it takes 30 seconds once you know what you're doing, and you don't need to buy anything. If you happen to have a Peake R5 or similar reset tool, we cover that too.

What This Works On

  • E36 3-Series: All models 1992–1999 (318i, 325i, 328i, M3), both OBD-I and OBD-II
  • Late E30 3-Series: 1988–1991 models equipped with the service indicator

Note: This procedure resets the oil service and inspection lights only. It will not reset the SRS airbag light — that requires a different process. We cover airbag light resets in a separate guide.

Method 1: Jumper Wire (What We Use)

You need a small piece of wire about 2 inches long. A straightened paperclip works fine.

Step 1: Find the Diagnostic Connector

Open the hood and look near the right strut tower. There's a round 20-pin connector with a dust cap — that's your DLC (Data Link Connector). Unscrew the cap and set it somewhere you won't lose it.

Step 2: Key Out

Before you touch any pins, make sure the key is out of the ignition. Car completely off.

Step 3: Find Pins 7 and 19

The pins are numbered on the connector. You're bridging pin 7 and pin 19.

Step 4: Insert the Jumper Wire

Bridge pins 7 and 19 with your wire. It needs to make solid metal-to-metal contact inside both receptacles — don't just rest it loosely on the surface.

Step 5: Turn Key to Position 2

Power on, but don't start the engine. The dash lights come on. You'll see the OIL SERVICE indicator.

Step 6: Wait 4 Seconds, Then Pull the Wire

Hold the jumper in place for about 4 seconds, then remove it. Keep the key in position 2.

Step 7: Check the Reset

The OIL SERVICE text disappears and the green service interval bars light up full. That's it. You're done.

If It Didn't Work

  • No reset: The wire probably didn't make solid contact. Try a slightly thicker piece of wire, or wiggle it until you feel it seat against the metal pins.
  • Still nothing: The timing can be fiddly your first time. Have someone else turn the key while you manage the wire — easier to get the sequence right.

Optional: Some people prefer to use a fused or inline resistor jumper wire as a precaution. It's not required, but it's there if you want the extra peace of mind.

Method 2: Reset Tool (Peake R5 or Similar)

If you already own a BMW service reset tool, here's the process.

Step 1: Key to Position 2

Power on, don't start the engine. Service lights illuminate.

Step 2: Plug In the Tool

Connect the reset tool to the diagnostic port. The yellow "ready" light comes on.

Step 3: Press and Hold

Hold the button on the tool. The red "reset" light starts flashing. Count the flashes.

Step 4: Release at the Right Count

  • OIL SERVICE reset: Release after 7 flashes
  • INSPECTION reset: Release after 23 flashes

Step 5: Verify and Cap

The indicator lights turn off, green bars show full. Replace the dust cap on the diagnostic connector.

That's the whole job. Five minutes, free if you've got a paperclip, and you never have to make a dealer trip for a reset again.
