BMW E30 Late Model Brake Duct Installation (1988-1991)

Difficulty: Beginner Time: 30-45 minutes Applies to: 1988-1991 BMW E30 3-Series with late model integral front bumper valance.

The late model E30 front bumper (1988-1991) has built-in rectangular intake ports on either side of the center section — these were designed from the factory to feed cool air toward the front brakes. If the OEM plastic duct inlets are cracked, missing, or were never replaced after bodywork, this guide covers the installation.

Check your bumper first. This guide only applies to the late model bumper with its two rectangular cutouts integrated into the valance. If you have an early model E30 (1982-1987) with the square IS/ES "cow catcher" valance, see the Cow Catcher Brake Duct guide instead. Wrong duct, wrong bumper — they don't interchange.

What You'll Need

Parts

Tools

  • Trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver (wrapped in tape to protect bumper)
  • 10mm socket and ratchet (if bumper lower trim needs to come down)
  • Clean rag

Step 1: Confirm Bumper Compatibility

From the front of the car, look at both lower corners of the front bumper valance. You should see rectangular openings on each side — roughly 4 inches wide, set into the bumper face. These are the OEM brake cooling intake ports. An image of the correct, late model valence is shown below.

If you see round or oval fog light holes with no rectangular cutouts, you have an early model or cow catcher bumper. Stop here and see the Cow Catcher guide. The Cow Catcher bumper for reference can be seen below.

Step 2: Remove the Old Duct Inlets (If Present)

If the original duct inlets are still in place — cracked, yellowed, or damaged — you need to remove them before installing the replacements.

Working from behind the bumper (you may need to reach through the wheel arch liner), locate the clips or tabs holding the existing duct in place. The OEM inlets are held by friction tabs that press into the bumper opening.

Use a trim tool to release the tabs from the inside, working around the perimeter. Pull the old duct forward and out of the opening.

If the openings are already empty, skip this step.

Step 3: Clean the Opening

Wipe down the inside of the bumper opening with a clean rag. Remove any dirt, old clip fragments, or broken pieces of the original duct. The new duct needs clean contact surfaces to seat properly.

Step 4: Install the New Duct

The left and right ducts are mirror images — left goes on the driver's side, right on the passenger side. Don't mix them up; the internal shape of the duct is directional.

Orient the new duct so its face is flush with the bumper surface when installed. From the front, the duct should sit cleanly in the rectangular opening with no gaps around the edges.

Push the duct into the opening from the front, pressing evenly around the perimeter until all tabs click into place. You should feel each tab engage as the duct seats.

Tip: If the duct feels tight, a very light coating of soapy water on the tabs helps it slide in without breaking anything. Don't force it — if significant resistance, check that no tabs are bent.

Step 5: Verify Fit

From the front of the car, the duct face should sit flush with the surrounding bumper surface. No rocking, no visible gaps at the edges.

Reach behind from the wheel arch and press on the duct face — it should be solid, not flexing or clicking.

Repeat on the other side.

You're Done

That's the installation. The late model E30 brake duct is a clip-in replacement — there's no adhesive, no fasteners, no cutting. The OEM design makes this an accessible job.

For daily street driving, the duct inlets alone provide passive air flow toward the front brakes — a meaningful improvement over open holes or missing ducts that create turbulence.

Want active brake cooling for track use? Pair these inlet ducts with our 3-inch brake duct adapter and a flexible duct hose run to caliper shrouds. See the E30 Track Brake Cooling Upgrade guide.

Troubleshooting

Duct won't seat flush

  • Check that all debris is cleared from the bumper opening — even a small piece of old plastic can prevent full seating.
  • Verify you have the correct left/right duct for the side you're installing.

Duct tabs broke during installation

  • The tabs on 3D-printed replacement ducts are designed to the same spec as OEM. If a tab breaks, contact us — we'll sort it out.
