Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 30 Minutes | No Special Tools Needed
After 25+ years, your shift boot has probably seen better days. This is one of the easiest interior refreshes you can do — transform your center console from tired to clean in under an hour.
What You'll Need
- New leather shift boot — RedlineGoods or similar quality leather
- Shift boot frame — Original (cleaned up) or Treedy Labs replacement
- Trim adhesive — Contact cement or trim glue (not superglue)
- Binder clips — To hold boot while adhesive cures
- Scissors and clean rag
Step 1: Remove the Old Shift Boot
The shift boot assembly pops out of the center console. No tools needed.
- Reach down both sides of the shift boot frame
- Find the two clips on each side
- Pinch the frame inward toward the shifter while pulling up
- The whole assembly lifts out
Set it on your workbench.
Step 2: Clean the Frame
- Pull the old material away from the frame
- Use a razor to slice through remaining adhesive
- Scrape off old glue residue
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol
- Let it dry completely
If your frame is cracked, grab a replacement from Treedy Labs.
Step 3: Attach the New Boot
Work slowly here. Rushing = bubbles and wrinkles.
- Apply trim adhesive to one side of the frame
- Press the boot material firmly
- Clip in place with binder clips
- Repeat around the entire frame
Let cure for 30 minutes before handling.
Step 4: Reinstall
- Slide the assembly over your shifter
- Align the clips with the console cutout
- Push down firmly until clips snap
That's it. Enjoy your refreshed interior!
Pro Tips
- Quality Matters: Skip cheap vinyl — real leather lasts 20+ years.
- Check Your Frame: Brittle clips? Replace now or do this job twice.
- Match Your Interior: Custom thread colors for a coordinated look.
