BMW E30 Heater Core and Valve Replacement Guide

Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: Half a day | Applies to: BMW E30 (1984-1991) with the metal heater coolant pipes: 318i / 318is / 325e / 325es / 325i / 325is. This console route is aimed squarely at the factory-A/C cars that make up most of the US fleet, where the core slides out the side without pulling the dash. Early plastic-pipe cars, and non-A/C cars where the core sits higher, can instead need the steering column dropped or the dash pulled, see the note below.

A sweet smell in the cabin, a windshield that fogs and will not clear, a wet passenger carpet, or coolant you keep topping off with no puddle on the driveway. That is a heater core leaking inside the heater box, and once it starts it does not stop. The heater valve right next to it is the other usual suspect: it is the electric solenoid that opens and closes coolant flow to the core, and when it sticks you get no heat, or heat you cannot turn off. The good news is that on the metal-pipe cars you can get both out through the center console without tearing the whole dashboard apart. Plan on half a day, take your time with the O-rings, and you will not be chasing leaks afterward.

This covers the heater core and the heater valve on the E30 with metal coolant pipes. It is a coolant job and an interior job at the same time, so read the safety note first.


Read This First: Coolant and Safety

WARNING: The cooling system is pressurized when warm, and coolant is poison. Let the engine sit cold before you open anything. Releasing the cap on a hot system drops the boiling point and the coolant can flash to a boil and scald you, so cool it down, then crack the expansion tank or radiator cap slowly to bleed off pressure. Ethylene-glycol coolant is lethal to pets and they are drawn to the sweet smell, so catch every drop in a pan and clean up spills right away.

CAUTION: Disconnect the negative battery cable before you start pulling the console and unplugging the heater valve. You are working around the wiring behind the dash, and a slipped screwdriver across a live connector is a bad afternoon. If your car has the factory anti-theft radio, have the code handy before you cut power.

NOTE: Counterintuitively, the A/C cars are the easy ones here, and that is most US E30s. On a factory-A/C car the heater core slides out the driver's side through the console, and because it lives on the coolant side it comes out without touching the sealed A/C system, no refrigerant to recover and the evaporator stays put on the passenger side. It is the non-A/C cars, and early plastic-pipe cars, where the core sits higher and can foul the steering column, leaving you to drop the column or pull the dash. The factory manual takes that conservative dash-out route for everyone; the console shortcut here is the real-world method for the metal-pipe A/C cars. Sort out which car you have before you commit: metal pipes plus A/C, and this is a half-day console job.

Before You Start

Figure out whether it is the core or the valve, or just do both. Coolant leaking into the footwell, a sweet antifreeze smell, or a windshield that fogs from the inside and will not clear points at a leaking core. No heat at all, or heat that will not shut off, usually points at the valve. Insufficient heat can also be a misadjusted blend-flap cable or a plain cooling-system fault, so rule those out before you blame the core. Both parts are cheap and you are already in there, so most people replace the core and the valve together and never think about it again.

This is a metal-pipe, A/C-car job. The whole reason this stays a console job instead of a dashboard-out job is the three metal coolant pipes that the core and valve hang from, plus the A/C-car heater box that lets the core slide out the side. You separate the core from the valve, push the pipes through the firewall an inch or so, and the core slides free. Early plastic-pipe cars, and non-A/C cars whose core sits higher against the steering column, do not always come apart this cleanly and can need the column dropped or the dash out.

Have your O-rings before you start, not after. The factory is clear on one point: when you reinstall the heater valve or the core, use new O-rings between the mounting flanges. Bentley never says how many, but on the metal-pipe cars it works out to three, and they are all the same 17.12 mm ring (64118377824): two seal the valve to the heater core, and the third seals the top metal pipe to the valve. Your new core and valve very likely do not come with them, so buy three up front. A little clean assembly oil on each one helps it seat without tearing.

Buy a spare flange nut or two. The small square nuts on the flange hardware are easy to drop into the heater box where you will never see them again. They cost pennies. Grab a couple extra so a dropped one does not end your day.

Top-up coolant on hand. You are going to open the heater hoses and lose some coolant, so have pre-mixed coolant ready to refill and bleed when you are done. BMW calls for phosphate-free antifreeze mixed 50/50 with clean water, distilled water preferred. Do not use a phosphate antifreeze, the factory considers it harmful to the system.

What You're Replacing

You are renewing the heater core (the small radiator that heats the cabin air) and the heater valve (the electric solenoid that lets coolant into the core), plus the O-rings that seal them to the metal pipes, three in all. The two diagrams below share a numbered key so you can connect the parts you buy to where they live in the dash: (1) heater core, (2) heater valve, (3) metal coolant pipes, (4) blower. The heater core (1) is the one part called out in both views.

Part Notes
Heater core The small heat-exchanger inside the heater box. Leaks here put coolant and fog in the cabin. Carries its own foam insulation, move it to the new core.
Heater valve (solenoid) Electrically operated valve that controls coolant flow to the core. Power is cut to it (valve opens) once the temperature knob is more than about 20 degrees off its coldest setting. Sticks open or closed when it fails.
Flange O-rings (three) Seal the core and valve to the metal pipes, all three the same ring. Always new, lightly oiled. The single most important parts in the job.
Metal coolant pipes The two firewall pipes the heater hoses clamp to. Clean the ends to a fresh seal on reassembly, and budget to replace them if they are pitted or corroded.
Square flange nuts Small nuts on the flange hardware. Easy to drop, cheap to spare.

The core and valve are sold separately and are inexpensive. You are not touching the blower, the control cables, or the A/C side, though if your heat was weak as well as leaking, check the blend-flap cable adjustment while the console is open.

CAUTION: BMW built the E30 heater core two different ways and they are not interchangeable. The aluminum-inlet core (64118391363) has metal pipes running side by side into a three-bolt flange, and it takes valve 64111386707. The plastic-inlet core (64118391362) has separated plastic inlets and takes valve 64111386706. The valve has to match the core, and the coolant pipes differ too. Go look at where the pipes meet the valve before you order anything. If yours are plastic and separated, you have the other car and this console-only procedure does not fully apply. There is no year or engine cutoff that decides this for you and the catalogs will not sort it out from your VIN, so trust your eyes, not the model year.

Step 1: Cool It Down, Disconnect the Battery, and Open the Heater Hoses

Start with a cold engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Then go to the engine bay and find the two heater hoses where they clamp to the metal pipes on the passenger side of the brake booster at the firewall. Set the cabin temperature lever to warm so the valve is open, then loosen the clamps, pull the hoses off, and catch the coolant that comes out in your pan. Expect a couple of quarts. Plug or tie the hoses up so they stop draining.

Step 2: Pull the Rear Console

Move inside. Lift out the rear ashtray and remove the 8 mm nut underneath it. Pull the parking-brake boot up and off and set it aside. The rear console section will lift clear. Work gently around the handbrake handle so you do not crack the trim.

Step 3: Pull the Front Console

Pry up the shift boot and turn it inside out so it pulls up the lever, then pry up the window switches (and the heated-seat or automatic-transmission switches if fitted) and unplug them. With the boot out of the way, remove the 10 mm console mounting nut down by the shifter. Take the two Phillips screws out of the front ashtray and lighter housing and disconnect the lighter. At the front of the console, turn the two plastic quarter-turn retainers 90 degrees to unlock them. The front console now lifts out to the rear.

Step 4: Remove the Floor Duct and Air Diverter

With the console out, take off the floor ducting connector on the driver's side, then the air diverter sitting above it by removing its single screw. Once those are out of the way the heater core is exposed and you have room to work. Set the small ducts aside where you will find them again, they go back in the same order.

Step 5: Free the Heater Core from the Box

Undo the two screws that hold the heater core into its mounting. They sit diagonally across from each other, so look for the second one before you decide you have them all. Then find the clamp that holds the metal pipes, the E-shaped bracket about two inches in from the firewall, just past the heater valve, and remove the screw through it. That clamp is what pins the pipes in place.

Step 6: Separate the Core from the Valve and Unplug the Valve

Pry the heater core out a bit to get at the flange between it and the valve. With a short 8 mm wrench, undo the flange bolts between the core and the valve. Then unplug the two-pin connector on top of the heater valve before you try to pull anything, you cannot remove the valve with it still connected.

Separating the core from the valve takes some prying, that is normal. To get the slack, push the metal pipes back through the firewall an inch or so. The heater core will then slide free of the box. Pull the valve out with the upper pipe attached, leaving the lower pipe loosely in place, and bring it out as an assembly.

CAUTION: Go easy on the pipes when you push them through the firewall. They are soft metal and you want them clean and straight for the new O-rings to seal against. Bent or gouged pipe ends will weep no matter how good your O-rings are.

Step 7: Move the Insulation and Prep the Pipes

Set the old core next to the new one and move the foam insulation over, matching it to the same spots. The new core will not seal or sit right in the box without it. While the assembly is out, clean the ends of the metal pipes where the heater hoses clamp on with a mild abrasive, so you get a fresh seal on both firewall connections. If a pipe is pitted or corroded at the seal, this is the moment to swap it for a new one.

Step 8: Reassemble with New O-Rings

This is the part that decides whether the job leaks. Install the top metal pipe onto the heater valve with a new, lightly oiled O-ring, and tighten its two bolts. Fit a new O-ring onto each remaining flange and lightly oil them too. Every O-ring new, every one oiled, none reused.

Set the valve back into the car, starting the pipe clamp screw loosely so it holds the pipes roughly in place. Slide the heater core about ninety percent of the way home, far enough that you can still reach the top flange bolt between the core and the valve. Run the core-to-valve flange bolts in, then push the core fully into place and reinstall the two diagonal mounting screws.

NOTE: The factory manual is silent on a torque value for the heater core and valve flange bolts, the pipe clamp screw, and the core mounting screws. There is no published spec for them, so do not chase a number that does not exist. These are small fasteners into light brackets and a plastic box, so snug them firmly by hand with the short wrench and stop. Cranking on them strips the threads or cracks the box, and the O-rings do the sealing, not clamping force.

Step 9: Plug In, Reconnect Hoses, and Refill

Plug the two-pin connector back onto the heater valve and refit the air diverter and the floor duct. Go back over every nut and bolt you touched and confirm it is snug. Out at the firewall, push the metal pipes back into position and clamp the two heater hoses onto their cleaned pipe ends.

Refill the cooling system with phosphate-free coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. On the six-cylinder cars, air gets trapped during filling, so bleed it: loosen the 8 mm bleeder screw on the thermostat housing and add coolant until it spills out, then snug the screw. Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and loosen the bleeder again until the coolant runs out free of air bubbles, then close it. Recheck the level cold and top up to the mark on the expansion tank. Four-cylinder cars just need the level brought up and rechecked warm.

Step 10: Run the Heat and Check for Leaks Before You Button Up

Before the console goes back in, run the heater on high for several minutes with the engine warm and watch the flanges, the firewall pipe connections, and the footwell for any weep. This is the whole reason to test before reassembly: if an O-ring is pinched or a hose clamp is loose, you want to find it now, not after the console is in. Once you have run it hot and stayed dry, reinstall the floor duct, then the front console, then the rear console, reversing the way they came out. Reconnect the battery last.

Troubleshooting

Coolant is weeping at a flange after the job. An O-ring is pinched, dry, or it was reused. Pull it back apart, fit a fresh O-ring with a light film of oil, and make sure the pipe end is clean and not gouged. Clamping the bolts harder will not fix a bad O-ring and may crack the housing.

Still no heat after replacing the valve. Confirm the two-pin connector is plugged in and the valve clicks when you move the temperature knob through its range. Remember how it works: power is cut to the valve (and it opens to let coolant flow) once the knob is more than about 20 degrees off the coldest setting. No coolant flow with the knob turned up means the valve, the wiring, or a blend-flap cable that never moved. If the core and valve are good, check the blend-flap cable adjustment.

The windshield still fogs and smells sweet. If it kept up after a core swap, you either have a second leak, a hose clamp that did not seal at the firewall pipes, or coolant that soaked into the carpet and padding and is still drying out. Pull the carpet up in the footwell and dry it fully, a wet underlay holds the smell for weeks.

You dropped a square nut into the heater box. It happens, that is why you bought a spare. Fish for it if you can reach it, otherwise use the spare and move on rather than tearing things further apart.

The pipes will not seal at the firewall. The pipe ends are pitted or were never cleaned. Pull the hoses, clean the ends to bright metal with a fine abrasive, and reclamp. If the metal is pitted past cleaning, replace the pipe.

A Note on Doing It Once

The forum writeups will tell you this is a 45-minute job, and a confident second time it nearly is. The first time, give yourself the half day, lay the console trim out in order, and do not rush the O-rings. Every leak that sends someone back into this job traces to a reused, dry, or pinched O-ring, or a pipe end that never got cleaned. Spend your patience there and the rest is just trim screws.

You pulled a leaking core and a tired valve out through the console without gutting the dashboard, sealed it with fresh O-rings at every flange, refilled and bled the cooling system the way the factory asks, and you proved it dry on hot heat before the trim went back in.
