E36 Head Bolt Torque: both engine families - the M42/M44 four and the M50/M52/S50/S52 six - run Stage 1 = 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) with NEW bolts, then +90 deg, then +90 deg. Head bolts are torque-to-yield, so they stretch on install and get replaced once removed, never re-torqued from old. The full per-family sequence and valve-cover screw values (the six uses both M6 and M7 screws) are in the Cylinder Head tables below. Watch the crank bolt too: the M16 stretch bolt is 330 Nm, but the M50/S50US variant is a different fastener at 410 +/- 20 Nm - confirm which one your engine uses before torquing.

Important Notes

Torque-to-Yield Fasteners

The following fasteners are torque-to-yield (TTY) and must be replaced after removal:

  • Crankshaft center bolt (M16/M18 stretch bolt)
  • Connecting rod bolts

Tightening Sequence

For cylinder heads and other multi-bolt components, always tighten in a crisscross pattern from the center outward. Refer to the service manual for specific sequences.

Thread Preparation

  • Apply fresh engine oil to bolt threads unless otherwise specified
  • Clean bolt holes of debris and old thread locker
  • Use specified thread locker where indicated
