The stock four-spoke E36 wheel looks like it was designed to match a beige dashboard and a tape deck. The three-spoke sport wheel BMW put in the M3 (and on late-build 328s from 3/98) is smaller in diameter, sits your hands at a more honest 9-and-3, and carries the roundel where a blank plastic cap used to be. It's the single easiest interior upgrade on the car, provided you pay attention to which slip ring you have and which one the new wheel expects.
This guide covers all the wrinkles: plug-and-play swaps, early-car splicing, and the M3-specific horn splice that the factory manual doesn't explain because the factory never expected you to do this.

Before You Start
This is the most important section in the guide. Skip it and you'll either (a) be driving a car with no airbag and no horn, or (b) be looking at an SRS light that won't go away unless you manually shut it off.
Safety Warning
You're working with an airbag. Respect it.
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and insulate it
2. Wait at least 10 minutes for the SRS capacitor to discharge before touching anything
3. Never point the airbag face toward yourself or anyone else
4. Store the removed airbag face-up on a soft surface
5. Handle wiring carefully
The airbag is an explosive. Treat it like one. The Bentley manual calls for disconnecting the negative battery terminal, insulating it, and waiting at least ten minutes before touching anything behind the wheel, that's the time the SRS backup capacitor needs to fully discharge. Nobody has ever regretted waiting eleven minutes. People have regretted waiting two.
The airbag stores face-up, always. If it goes off face-down on a bench, it launches itself into the ceiling. Face-up, it just makes a loud noise and ruins your day instead of your day and your garage.
The slip ring is a coiled ribbon. It's also called a clock spring or airbag contact ring. Once the steering wheel is off, that ribbon must stay centered, do not let the slip ring turn freely while the wheel is off the column. If it does rotate, the ribbon can snap, and now you need a new one. If you get one out of center by accident, the Bentley fix is to rotate it fully one direction, then three full turns back the other way until the alignment arrow lines up in the inspection window.
Have the radio code handy before you disconnect the battery. Factory head units lock themselves when they lose power. Convertible owners, this doesn't apply to you. Coupe owners: crack a window about half an inch before you pull the battery, because the one-touch drop feature won't work without power and you may need to get back in the car before the battery is reconnected. Although everyone should just open their window. No one likes being locked out.
Steering Wheel Options
There are three factory E36 wheel styles. Only two of them are upgrades.

The three-spoke measures about 38 cm across versus the four-spoke's 39.5 cm. It's not a huge number on paper but it's a noticeable difference in your hands, and the grip profile sits lower, closer to a natural 9-and-3 than the awkward 10-and-2 the four-spoke tends to force.
A note on E46 and later wheels: Don't. The 1999-and-later cars (E46, 2000+ E39, 2000+ E38, Z3 facelift, all Z4) switched to two-stage airbags with four-pin connectors and column-mounted contact rings. You can't just splice your way around the difference, the igniter logic is different, and there's no safe way to confirm the airbag will deploy correctly. The three-spoke on your E36 needs to come from an E36 (or, per community experience, a pre-3/99 E39). Everything after that is incompatible.
Before You Start: Model Year Matters

BMW used three different slip rings across the E36's production run. The part you're installing, the later "'111" slip ring, is the universal target for every retrofit. But getting there depends on what's behind your current wheel.

In plain English:
- If your car was built after 9/94 and isn't an M3, you're probably plug-and-play. Check your existing slip ring part number before ordering anything.
- If your car is any M3 built before March 1998, you need to splice the horn wire. This is the case the video guides skip over and the factory manual doesn't cover.
- If your car is a '92 or '93, you're doing both the airbag splice and the horn splice.
- Every non-plug-and-play car also needs the later-style column switch bracket.
Use a new slip ring, not a used one. A used slip ring looks fine on the outside but can have broken ribbon contacts inside that you'd never know about until the SRS light stays on. And if a used slip ring turns more than about 2.5 revolutions in either direction off center, or turns freely with no stop, it's already defective, throw it in the parts bin.

- Column switch bracket, BMW P/N 32 31 1 162 088, under $10 new. Only required if your car has a '901 or '804 slip ring (everything except plug-and-play cars).
Airbags from a BMW dealer come with a large "dangerous goods" sticker and can't be shipped directly to consumers, pick up at the parts counter, or source the wheel + airbag together from a reputable seller.

The Procedure
These steps cover the full M3 / early-car scenario because it's the hardest case. If you're doing the plug-and-play 95+ non-M3 version, skip the splicing steps, we'll call them out.
Step 1, Park It Straight, Then Disconnect the Battery
Roll the front wheels perfectly straight and the steering wheel level. This matters more than it sounds, the slip ring relies on the wheel being centered to stay in its known-good position.
Coupe people: crack a window half an inch before the battery comes off. Everyone: have the radio code ready if your head unit is factory.
Pull the negative battery terminal with a 13 mm. Wrap the terminal end or the cable in a rag so it can't accidentally flop back onto the post. Then go do something else for ten minutes. The Bentley manual specifies this wait so the SRS backup capacitor fully discharges. You're not in a hurry.
Step 2, Remove the Airbag
Turn the wheel so you can get a driver behind the airbag at roughly the 3 o'clock position. There are two retaining screws back there, one at roughly 3 o'clock, one at 9. Which Torx you need depends on which wheel you have: the standard 4-spoke, the M-Technic 3-spoke, and most sport wheels use T30. The Sport 3-Spoke (P/N 32 34 1 092 050 and its airbag) uses T27. Check your hardware before you commit, a T30 in a T27 socket will cam out and round the head in about half a turn.
The shank of a standard Torx driver can be a pig to fit through the wheel at the right angle. Take your time and get square purchase on the screw before you apply any torque.
Loosen both screws most of the way out. They're captive or long enough that they won't fall out but they'll release the airbag from the back of the wheel. Hold the front of the airbag so it doesn't drop into your lap as the second screw comes free.
Ease the airbag straight forward. Behind it you'll find:
- A yellow or orange airbag igniter connector
- A separate brown horn wire (on M-Technic wheels) or a spade connector for the horn (on some sport wheels)
Disconnect both. Set the airbag on the bench, padded face up, somewhere it won't get knocked.
Step 3, Mark and Remove the Wheel
Before you break anything loose, make alignment marks. Use a center punch on the splined collar of the wheel and a matching mark on the steering shaft, or use a fine-tip marker at the 9, 12, and 3 o'clock positions. This is your insurance in case the wheel needs to go back on temporarily, and it also confirms the new wheel is landing in the same clocking.
The center bolt is a 16 mm and it's torqued from the factory to 63 Nm (46 ft-lb). A breaker bar will get it off, but an impact gun is the right tool here, even a budget battery impact makes this a two-second job instead of a grunt-and-pray. If you've got one, use it. Once the bolt is out, the wheel will still be held on by the splines, pull gently and evenly from both sides. If it won't budge, turn the ignition key one click to release the column lock, which sometimes binds the splines.
As the wheel comes off the shaft, reach behind it and pull the airbag igniter lead and the horn wire back through the column opening. A small screwdriver helps release the connectors from their receptacles if your fingers won't fit.
Step 4, Remove the Lower Steering Column Trim and Stalk Switches
For plug-and-play cars, you can sometimes get away without touching the stalks, but if you're swapping the column switch bracket, they all have to come off.
Undo the single screw holding the lower steering column cover (it's on the underside, roughly centered). Pull the cover halves apart gently, there's adhesive-backed foam on the inside that absorbs vibration, and you'll want it to stay attached. Set the upper half aside.
You should now be able to see the underside of the stalk switch holder (the column switch bracket). There's a single retaining screw on the underside of the bracket.
To remove each stalk, turn signal, wiper, and (if equipped) cruise control, squeeze the small retaining tabs on the top and bottom of where the stalk meets the bracket, and slide the stalk horizontally out of its slot. They disconnect from the internal electrical contacts as they slide clear. Do all three before attempting to drop the bracket.
With the stalks out, remove the bracket retaining screw, depress the retaining tabs, and slide the whole bracket down and off the column. You'll need to disconnect the main harness plug at the bottom of the shaft to fully free it.


Step 5, Transfer the Slip Ring Locking Pin to the New Bracket
This is the detail the original DIY writeups gloss over. The new column switch bracket does not come with the white plastic slip ring locking pin installed, you transfer it from the old bracket.
On the old bracket, the pin is on the right-hand side (as viewed from the driver's seat). On the new bracket, it goes on the left-hand side. That's the whole point of the switchover, BMW moved the pin location when they changed the slip ring design, and that's why the old bracket physically can't work with the new slip ring.
Pry the white plastic pin out of the old bracket. It's a pain, it doesn't want to come out, but it does come out. Feed it into the pin hole on the left side of the new bracket until it's fully seated.
While you're here, note the horn contact switch on the old bracket. It's a separate small piece with its own wire and connector. On the original setup, the horn completes its circuit through a metal contact ring on the back of the old slip ring, which that switch presses against. On the new '111 slip ring there is no metal contact ring on the back, the horn signal is carried through a wire (brown). You don't need to reinstall the horn contact switch on the new bracket, but keep the car-side horn wire and connector accessible. You'll need it for the splice in Step 7.
Step 6, Install the New Column Switch Bracket
Feed the new bracket up onto the column, line up the mounting point, and thread the single retaining screw back in. Reconnect the main harness plug at the bottom of the shaft.
Reinstall the stalks one at a time by sliding them back into their slots until the tabs click. Gentle side pressure to make sure they're fully seated.
Don't put the column trim back on yet, you still need access underneath for the horn splice and final connections.

Step 7, Splice the Horn Wire (and the Airbag Wires, for '92-'93 Cars)
Plug-and-play cars (95+ non-M3, M3 from 3/98): skip this step entirely. Your slip ring and wiring are already matched.
For M3 (any pre-3/98) and '94 non-M3 cars: the airbag connector is the same between your '804 slip ring and the new '111 slip ring, so no airbag splicing is needed. But the horn circuit is different, and that's the splice everyone trips on.
On the new '111 slip ring you'll see two wire leads: a yellow/black pair for the airbag and a brown/blue wire that's the horn signal. The blue wire on the new slip ring is not used on E36, cap it off with heat-shrink and set it aside.
Take the car-side horn wire, the one you disconnected from the old horn contact switch when you removed it from the old bracket, and cut the wire about four inches back from the car-side connector. You're keeping the connector and about four inches of wire; you're discarding the contact switch end. Strip both ends.
Splice the car-side horn connector wire into the brown wire on the new slip ring. Solder the joint, cover with heat-shrink, and hit it with a heat gun. The horn now signals through the slip ring ribbon the way BMW designed the later system to work.

For '92-'93 cars only: you also need to splice the airbag wires because your old '901 slip ring used different airbag connector colors than the '111.

Solder each connection individually, heat-shrink each one individually, and bundle with a zip tie or wire loom when you're done. Verify continuity with a multimeter before you trust it, an airbag circuit that reads open after install will light the SRS dash lamp and store a fault you need a scan tool to clear.
Step 8, Mount the Slip Ring to the New Wheel
On the bench, lay the new three-spoke wheel face-down. The slip ring mounts to three small screws on the back of the wheel hub.
Before you mount it, confirm the slip ring is centered. A new '111 ships with a red plastic centering pin or locking screw that keeps it from rotating during shipping and installation, leave that pin in place for now, through the mounting and the install onto the column. The Bentley manual specifically calls out that a rotated-out-of-center slip ring is a hard problem to recover from, so you want that pin doing its job until the whole thing is bolted together.
Thread the three small mounting screws through the slip ring into the back of the wheel. Snug, don't torque to death, these are plastic-to-metal threads.
If you've got CRC copper paste or a dielectric grease on the shelf, a thin film on the horn contact area of the slip ring is a nice touch, Bentley calls for it to prevent corrosion and squeaks. It's not mandatory. We've done this job plenty of times without it and everything still works fine years later. Skip it if you don't have any; don't go out and buy a tube just for this.

Step 9, Install the Wheel on the Column
Feed the airbag lead and the horn wire back through the column opening before you put the wheel on, easier to do it now than to fish them out afterward.
With the front wheels still straight and the steering shaft still centered (it hasn't moved, you've been careful, right?), slide the wheel onto the splines. The locking pin on the new slip ring should engage the cutout in the column switch bracket on the left side. If it doesn't line up, don't force it, pull the wheel back off, rotate it 180 degrees, and try again. Getting the clocking right is what your alignment marks from Step 3 were for.
Thread the 16 mm center bolt back in. The factory torque is 63 Nm (46 ft-lb), and that is honestly more than the steering column lock is designed to absorb when you're holding the wheel still. Snug to spec if you can do it without stressing the lock; otherwise 35-40 ft-lb is community consensus for a safe "tight enough", that bolt holds the wheel on the splines, it's not structural in the load-bearing sense.
Now remove the centering pin from the slip ring. This is the moment it becomes active. Don't forget this step, if you leave it in, the slip ring can't rotate with the wheel and will tear itself apart the first time you make a turn.

Step 10, Reinstall the Airbag and Close Up
Plug the airbag igniter lead back into the connector on the rear of the airbag. Plug the horn wire into its spade terminal. Double-check both are fully seated, the airbag connector is keyed via a metal restrictor arm and an angled plug body, so it only fits one way (long end of the connector facing down).
One gotcha: some airbags have a plastic warning label inside the wheel that the wiring can catch on as you press the airbag home. Route the wires outside the label, or remove the label entirely if it won't cooperate. If the airbag plug feels like it's popping loose as you seat the unit, that's why.
Set the airbag into the wheel carefully and thread both retaining screws back in. Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb). This is in-pounds, not foot-pounds, a hand-tight snug with a Torx driver is already close.
Reinstall the lower steering column trim, screw back in, foam back on the inside if it came off.

Step 11, Power Up and Verify
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. No one should be sitting in the car when you do this, per the Bentley manual, fault conditions can trigger things on first power-up.
Turn the key to the first position. The SRS indicator on the gauge cluster should illuminate for 4-6 seconds during the self-test, then go out. If it stays on, something is wrong, stop, don't drive it, and see the troubleshooting section below.
Press the horn. If it beeps, you're done. If it doesn't, recheck the horn splice (Step 7).
Start the engine. Drive it around the block. Turn the wheel lock-to-lock a couple of times on a slow U-turn to verify the slip ring ribbon is moving freely and the SRS light stays off. Come back home, park, have a beer, stare at the roundel where a blank plastic pad used to be.
Troubleshooting
SRS light stays on after installation. The most common culprit is a loose or miswired airbag splice. Kill the battery, wait ten minutes, and go back through the airbag connector and any splices with a multimeter. Fault codes stored on first power-up often need a scan tool to clear even after the wiring is fixed, expect a visit to an independent BMW shop if the light doesn't go out on its own after a few key cycles.
Horn doesn't work. If you spliced the horn on a '92-'94 or M3 car, recheck the splice, brown slip ring wire to the car-side horn connector. If you're on a plug-and-play car, confirm the slip ring's locking pin engaged the cutout on the column switch bracket when you installed the wheel. A plug-and-play horn that doesn't work usually means the slip ring isn't seated properly against the bracket.
Wheel sits crooked after install. You installed it one spline off. Pull the wheel, rotate it, and reinstall. This is what the alignment marks in Step 3 were for.
Horrible scraping or grinding noise on steering input. The slip ring ribbon is fouling something, usually because the ring rotated out of center with the wheel off, or the centering pin was never removed after install. If the noise is present at install time, stop driving and pull the wheel. If it developed over time and you didn't just install a new wheel, the likely culprit is a worn-out upper column bearing, that's its own separate job.
SRS light comes on intermittently after a few weeks. A splice that was marginal from day one is degrading. Redo it with solder and fresh heat-shrink, crimps don't belong in this circuit.
Column switch bracket won't slide on. The slip ring pin from your old bracket didn't transfer cleanly, or it's still installed on the right-hand side when the new bracket wants it on the left. Pull it and refit.

A Note on Parts Sourcing
The '111 slip ring is increasingly the hard part of this job. BMW still lists it, but supply is sporadic and prices have roughly doubled since the early 2010s. Used ones off a donor wheel work in theory but, as covered above, have a high failure rate once they're on the bench with you. Factor the new slip ring into your parts budget from day one and don't be tempted by "tested, works great" listings on auction sites, when it fails two months after install, you're doing the whole job over.
Wrap-Up
A three-spoke E36 is a different car to drive. The smaller diameter, the lower 9-and-3 grip, the cleaner sightline to the gauge cluster, none of it is a huge change individually but the whole package adds up to "why wasn't it always like this." And you can do it in an afternoon with $300-$400 in parts.
While you've got the column trim off and the interior apart, take a look at the cracked shift boot frame, the double-DIN-sized hole where the HVAC controls used to be, or the sunroof motor cover (sedan) / sunroof motor cover (coupe).
